Different punishments
Teachers had permissions to hit kid for punishment back then. These punishments were way harder than we do now.
Punishments in 1900s:
Punishemnts in 1990s:
If students misbehaved, they will get more attention, but now we don’t really do that.
Punishments in 2015:
So as you can see, our punishments are getting "nicer and nicer", but is it good? People still haven't got an answer, people have different opinions, there is no right and wrong.

- Teachers would use a ruler to rap the child on the knuckles.

What did parents think of their kids getting punish
Many parents did grumble about their children were punished. They would get angry with the child for misbehaving, not at the teacher for punishing. Parents were often embarrassed that their child has misbehaved and some punished the child further once the child got home.
Students' behavior in 1900s
Children were expected to behave and be productive. They were to be silent while they worked. The students memorized much of their work, not only stories and poems, but the multiplication tables, geography, etc. Also, they were taught to be respectful to the teacher and to other students.
Why were students behaved so well
Personal Opinion:
Students will got afraid of getting punish, I think getting punish is also something that’s embarrassing, but that’s not the only reason of their well behavior, I believe that students in the past were being more progress than the students now, because getting educations is something quite luxury back then, so students more appreciative of this opportunity.

Good or not?
In 1900s, teachers had permissions to hit students for punishments, this did affect students’ behavior, they behaved really well back then. But the questions is, is this right?
Some people disagree of hitting kids, because hitting kids may injure kids, and their healthy, strong body is the most important thing! Also scientists believe that hitting kids is leading them to the wrong track of treating people and problem solving. When kids grow up, they might just hit people just because he doesn’t like them! Or they will use violence to solve the problem because they can’t think properly when they are angry and worry.
I believe that many teachers do want to teach students the right thing, and that’s what they suppose to do too, so they choose not to hit them and lead them to the right track by teaching them patiently. But there are teachers that hit kids around the world, especially in Asia. Not because the teachers don’t want to teach students they right things, well, maybe a few of them actually don’t, but maybe because they didn’t realize the harm of it.
Some of the teachers hit kids when they misbehaved, but after they hit the kids, only a few teachers teach their kids about why is it wrong, why shouldn’t them do it. Some of the kids might understand why this is wrong by themselves, but what about the kids who don’t understand? Kids who don’t understand will do it the next time, teachers will hit them again, this cycle will go on and on until kids actually understand it. But the harm and bad affect kids had will never remove.
Anyway, people still haven’t get an answer of ‘is it good to hit kids or not’, they have different reasons and their own points. but I think it is not good to hit kids at any time. Luckily, New Zealand has banned hitting kids.
No matter what, from my personal view, we shouldn’t hit kids at all.
